This one isn't really new, but I hadn't posted it before, mainly because it doesn't feel done, especially the lower half. But there are parts of it I kinda like. This was a combination of zbrush, modo (?) and photoshop.

Hello!

I have found you through the website conceptart.org. I read on that site that you were a leader in the concepts for the monsters in the movie Cloverfield. I am a freshman in highschool and want to eventually work in a position that involves concept art, do you have any suggestions that will help me? It would be greatly appreciated!
you can contact me at nintendogirl.deviantart.com
sorry that i cant give you my e-mail.

thanks for anything!

Hi there...quick correction on your post...I didn't design the creatures for cloverfield, I just art directed them into the movie. Production already had designs, so my job was to babysit them through our pipeline of model, paint and all that all the way into the final film. I would have loved to design stuff for that movie, though. Maybe next time.

But about your main question.... You just have to work at it very hard and be tenacious. I always tell people that they should try to have a strong foundation in basics, like drawing, painting, sculpting; as much traditional real world stuff as possible before going digital. After that it's just a matter of following your interest, seeing who's the best and trying to be better than them. It takes time and talent. Surround yourself with people better than you, whether in a school or in the regular world and sponge off them as much info as possible. There's no secret really, it's mostly hard work. Getting jobs is talent plus connections. Connections come from friends and social networks and being out there in the open where employers can see you. It you're really good., you'll get work. This is the basic approach.

Oh sorry about the misinterpretation, also thankyou for replaying to my message so quickly! :D I appreciate the info a million times over! I think that ill start trying different mediums to see what im best at and to improve what im not good at. Thanks again! (wonderful work btw >w< )
